A Baseball Legend Visits
Rock Island Gallery
On August 13, 2005, the San Diego Padres hosted a "Salute to the Negro Leagues", paying tribute to the more than 4,000 athletes who played in the Negro Baseball Leagues from 1920-1962. Among the former players honored at the ceremony was 93-year old Buck O'Neil, star player and manager with the Kansas City Monarchs, and the first African American coach in the major leagues. Buck visited the gallery before the ceremony, along with one of our featured artists, Kadir Nelson. Kadir was also honored at Petco Park for his collection of Negro Leagues paintings.
If you've already been to the gallery, Kadir Nelson's art has undoubtedly touched your heart. "Willie Foster & Young Friends" pictured below, portrays one of the greatest pitchers in Negro League baseball history. But, this is much more than a baseball painting. It portrays an athlete bigger than life, revered by his young fans. There is pride and sadness in the faces, but above all, resolve. And, it was this spirit that lifted Jackie Robinson above a sea of hatred and prejudice when he broke the baseball color barrier in 1947. Thank you Jackie, and Buck, and all who came before you. Your time is now, and forever.

Plain Talk About Plein Air

"Hotel Del in August"
By Daniel Ochoa
If you have not yet discovered the natural beauty and energy of plein air (plān-âr), you are missing one of the purest of art forms. Originated by the impressionist landscape painters of the French Barbizon School during the mid 19th Century, plein air (French for "in the open air"), is an outdoor study of a still life or landscape, painted in natural light. Without the benefit of studio lighting and backdrops, the artist feels and interprets the energy of a natural scene, painting quickly and decisively before the light changes.
Plein air paintings offer exciting opportunities to add style and unique interpretation to your art collection, without spending thousands of dollars. Rock Island Gallery features the work of three plein air artists: Daniel Ochoa, Cathy Carey, and Catherine Dzialo-Haller. We have a large collection of original works priced from $200-$600.
