Born in Middletown, Connecticut, Catherine began exhibiting her paintings in high school while studying under John Sweeney. She won a National Scholastic Art Award at 16. When she moved to California she took workshops with Sergei Bongart while attending Otis Art Institute and studying under names such as Joe Magnani and Charles White. She moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and attended the Honolulu Art Academy where she studied under Jade Fon and Tom Nicholas She also attended the University of Hawaii and studied with Elmer Bishoff, Paul Wonner and Myra Cantor.
When she returned to California she received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.She came to San Diego in 1987, and worked as a creative director and partner in an advertising agency. In 1995, she lived in Russia for the year and attended Academy of Art, Moscow.
